Mission

It is our mission to be the contractor of choice in the construction industry through continuous innovation.

Values

Today, we are in our third generation of family ownership and still dedicated to our root values of quality, safety, integrity and efficiency.

History

In 1927, two years before the Great Depression began, Roland W. Dunteman decided to purchase a loader tractor on a loan from his father. At the same time, the Village of Bensenville, Illinois was upgrading roads in and around the village. Knowing that Roland, 17 at the time, had one of the only loader tractors in the area, the contractor completing the project hired him to help.

Not long after that, the Village of Bensenville began to hire Roland for various projects beginning with the construction of a new golf course. That was the day R.W. Dunteman Co. was launched.

At the end of World War II, R.W. Dunteman recognized the large market for home infrastructure construction. For much of the 40’s, the company concentrated on digging basements and replacing infrastructure in and around the Chicago suburbs for returning veterans.
Throughout the 50’s, the country experienced a large interstate boom due to the public works program promoted by President Eisenhower. Thus, the company transitioned to focus mainly on highway and road construction.

In the 1960’s as the company was experiencing substantial growth, the need for an asphalt plant was recognized. In 1963, the company purchased its first asphalt plant, known today as Dukane Asphalt. The plant allowed R.W. Dunteman to supply its own materials for projects, therefore reducing costs for customers while keeping up with the ever-increasing needs of the road building industry.

A second piece of property located in Addison, Illinois was purchased in the 70’s for the creation of a second asphalt plant. This allowed us to provide even more service to our customers, along with greater flexibility in the areas we serve.

In the 80’s, R.W. Dunteman took the initiative to become a “green” company by purchasing a recycling operation called Crush Crete. The operation accepts waste concrete and asphalt for reuse within projects. Not only is it environmentally conscious, but it also cuts costs for customers.
As the decades continued, R.W. Dunteman expanded into other areas of the construction industry including jobs with the railroads, airports and concrete paving. Receiving these increasingly large projects necessitated the need for a portable asphalt plant, and in 2013, one was purchased.

Like the golf course that started our company (which later became part of O’Hare Airport) we have seen many changes over the years and substantial growth along with it. In fact, we are now in our third generation of family ownership and have completed constructive work on every major highway in and around the Chicagoland area including I-355, I-294, I-290 and Route 53. Other projects have included runway rehabilitation at O’Hare and Midway Airports, and rail work with several major railroads.

As we look back on our company’s extensive history, we look forward to many more years of growth, expansion and innovation.
